COBBLESTONE Magazine May-June 2024. It’s summertime! What better season to hit the road for a car trip around the country? Explore the highlights of the country from some of its most famous highways and find out why road trips are such an iconic part of the American experience!
In 1903, Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson became the first person to drive all the way across the USA. It was no mean feat. In those days, there were few road signs, paved roads, gas stations, or even detailed road maps of the country, and the journey took him 64 days. Still, it generated a lot of attention and “paved” the way for America’s fascination with road trips!
Learn how the highways we have today began with a movement led by bicyclists, try out the lesser-known pastime called autocamping, and follow some of the most scenic routes across the country. Find out why Route 66 is so important to the American landscape and see the memorable sights along Route 2. Then, meet real families who live on the road full-time! This issue of COBBLESTONE is quite an exciting ride!
