COBBLESTONE Magazine March-April 2025. The Brooklyn Bridge, an engineering marvel in the 1800s, remains an iconic New York City landmark today. Discover the enthralling history of the “Great Bridge” with COBBLESTONE!

Travel back in time to May 25, 1883 to experience opening day at the Brooklyn Bridge! Schools and businesses closed for the occasion and tens of thousands of people traveled to Brooklyn to soak in the excitement firsthand. The day’s festivities included a parade and ended with fireworks! But why exactly was this bridge so important?

Until the construction of the bridge, the only way to cross from Manhattan to Brooklyn was via ferry—not exactly the best option on freezing cold days when icy waters could shut down travel altogether. When John A. Roebling got stuck on an icebound ferry in 1853, he knew something had to change. Fortunately, Roebling was an expert engineer with experience constructing suspension bridges. While it took three decades and Roebling himself would not live to see it, his vision for a bridge changed the city of New York forever!

Discover the tremendous personal cost to the Roebling family, the fascinating process of constructing the bridge, and the amazing resourcefulness of Emily Roebling, who stepped in to help ensure the bridge’s completion. Readers can even construct their very own bridges! This issue of COBBLESTONE is engineered to perfection!
