Meet Tah and Salorn - two very different people both living in Cambodia. Imagine giving up your comfortable bed, your favorite compact discs, and even your hair. That is just what 14-year-old Tah did when he became a novice Buddhist monk. The life of a monk is simple and humble. Monks are forbidden to listen to non-religious music or eat after noon, and they must wear an orange robe every day. Tah's typical day begins at 4 a.m. and includes praying, studying, and collecting food and donations for the entire wat (temple). Salorn, a 13-year-old orphan, living in the province of Rattanakiri, does not live by such strict rules. She lives in her own hut and works along side her aunt in the fields. She and other members of the Kreung nation worship ancestral spirits. In this issue you will also explore the ruins of Angkor Wat and learn about traditional Cambodian dance. You can even make your own version of traditional Cambodian books, which where once made from palm leaves.
