Ken Burns's The War

Designed to be a young person's companion to Ken Burns's latest documentary devoted to World War II, the September issue introduces COBBLESTONE readers to some of the people and places highlighted in that film. By working closely with Florentine Films and focusing on characters who were interviewed extensively for the film, this issue tells their remarkable stories and shows how these "ordinary" Americans were called upon to do extraordinary things. Meet a Marine who fought in the South Pacific, a medic who saved lives in Europe, an African American who never got the chance to fight, a young girl who became a prisoner of war in the Philippines, a farmer's son who became a fighter pilot - among others. An exclusive interview with Ken Burns is included, and we also caught up with a young New Hampshire native whose voice earned a starring role in the film.
