CLASSICAL COMPANION

Sub-titled ‘The Indispensable Guide to the Study of Classical Civilization,’ the Classical Companion makes a great gift for children with an interest in ancient history, and can be an incredible resource and teaching tool for homeschoolers and teachers, as well.

The five core chapters each focus on Ancient Greece or Rome’s struggles with a challenging rival. Chapters include: Persia vs. Greece, Greece vs. Rome, Carthage vs. Rome, Gaul vs. Rome and Egypt vs. Rome. Material covered includes politics, rulers, generals, great battles, and culture. Each chapter offers a play with a cast of 7 to 12 characters, which can be enacted or simply read aloud.  The plays are followed by cultural projects, including making a Greek chiton, building a model Roman camp, or hosting a Roman dinner. Puzzle pages contain crosswords and other worksheet activities involving vocabulary and facts from the preceding articles. Answers are provided in the back of the book. Finally, you’ll find a “Companion” section at the end of each chapter with topics for comparison, essays, and debates, and even more suggestions for additional activities. 

Recommended for children ages 9 to 14, though older and younger children may also benefit in the company of a larger group or family setting. Paperback, 184 pages.
